The Ombudsperson or the Public Defender of Rights (in Slovak Verejný ochranca práv or Verejná ochrankyňa práv, if the holder of the office is a woman) is an independent body that shall participate in the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons and legal entities in Slovakia. The Ombudsperson is independent from the government, parliament and courts.

The Ombudsperson can investigate complaints related to potential human rights violations and determine whether your human rights have been violated. If the Ombudsperson finds in investigation of a complaint facts indicating infringement of fundamental rights and freedoms by any legally binding act or internal regulation issued by a public administration body, he or she can file a motion to the competent body to change or repeal that act.

The Ombudsperson can only investigate situations related to an alleged violation of your human rights by Slovakian public authorities. The competence of the Ombudsperson relates to public administration bodies, such as state administration bodies, local self-government authorities and bodies that otherwise intervene into rights and obligations of natural persons and legal entities in the area of public administration.
